Amy, this post is just for you OMG OMG OMG!! I do not like this show. I have persevered through hopelessly awful episodes, but finally I have seen inspired writing that led to an unforgettable Spader performance. He is such an incredible storyteller. And he did Nicholson.... Aaaaaagh!! I loved it. Haha...awesome. That episode was certainly the best we've seen of Robert this season. Unfortunately, I'm kinda of losing interest in the show now! :/ I loved Spooked, but the latest episode was rather boring to me and I realized how those grand Spader moments will probably be few and far between. It's just starting to bug me how mellow his character is. Anyone else feel this way? I miss the sexually charged, exciting Spader spirit.

I really like The Office, but it seems rather lost this year with Andy as boss. I don't think the writers are feeling very confident with him as RM. The other thing is they have not developed Robert past a one dimensional type character. As an audience we need to know more about the guy and what makes him tick...they are not giving James anything for his wheelhouse! I still though am wearing out my rewind function to watch James over and over in his short appearances. He is giving a lot to a very under developed character writing wise. I did really enjoy watching him and John playing squash. The scenes where he gets to play off of Jim or Dwight are the best. Ed Helms (Andy) is just too light weight of an actor and their scenes lose a lot because Andy fails to give great reactions to Robert.

"But the way the show is using him so far—sparingly, as an aloof, omniscient, and fearsome motivator—is essentially as nothing more than a plot instigator, and it’s doing nothing to enrich the series. It’s also getting repetitive."
Indeed! For James' talent, he's used waaay too sparingly. And like JB said, the show isn't telling us much about his character. If things keep going this way they will lose everyone's interest soon. Darn. I was so excited and had such high hopes. Crossing my fingers the writers get it together!

I read the fairly interesting article too, and it seems that the overall immediate reaction of shock over James appearance and styling in the first episode may have been a fair indication of the show going pear-shaped. I generally find little to amuse me in The Office, but the again i may not have a sense of humor. I think it got better in the Halloween-episode, but it seems to have deteriorated again. And the poor writing, and, as you say, sparing and probably unwise use of RC as plot-maker hasn't helped. A character - and quality - actor like him has little to sink his teeth in in that role: he certainly can act sexy-creep, but creep-creep may not be the best starting point for character development . In an interview, he stated how much fun this show was to act in. I find that hard to believe, and i sense a whiff of desperation - the most offputting smell in the world - in the premises. I hope I'm wrong.

I hope I'm wrong. When you think about it, he can't really say anything negative when asked about how he likes acting on The Office. It's really a silly question for an interviewer to ask in general because if the actor isn't liking their experience, they can't actually say it. I remember in an earlier interview James mentioned his favorite part was reading the script rather than acting it. Maybe that speaks to his experience a little...

Of cause you're right - he can't say anything else. But one only has to take a look at his eyes in the interview when he speaks of the fun...he can't act his way out of that! And i doubt reading this dead dog is very pleasurable either...

In one early interview he did say these were the funniest people he has ever worked with. He may be having a good time with his co-workers.

^True. I can certainly imagine that the entire cast of The Office would be a super fun lot to hang with. If James has any complaints I'm sure it's solely with the lack of substance from the writers this season. But we could be in for a surprise...maybe it gets better.

I hope your both right. Maybe he has fun with the cast, what do i know. But I have been in my fair share of hopeless, pear shaped, half-dead or even completely dead work projects, and believe me: no matter how hard you fight, sooner or later the elephant in the room simply cannot be ignored any longer. But maybe all the actors, James included, bonds tremendously through shared frustrations over the poor material... From experience, i know that that can be a very fine social glue!

So what did you guys think of yesterday's episode? They threw us a small bone about Robert with him playing harmonica and being in a band...but it still didn't quite appease my Spader appetite. We still only got a few sentences from him. The episode overall though was pretty enjoyable. Better than last weeks for sure.

I loved watching him play the harmonica. I just wonder if it was actually him. If so, he did GREAT! I also agree that this episode was better than the last one.

I am really looking forward to "Mrs. California" and the Christmas episodes!!! Same here!!! I have really enjoyed the promo clips I have seen from the Mrs. California episode. I have the feeling Robert may move out of the one-dimensional character we have been seeing. He certainly is not the cool and totally collected character we have been seeing so far...he was actually panicked when trying to convey his directive to Andy. ;D
