Wow!!!!! I have just started watching The Practice and OMG!!! Alan looks soooo yummy and he is... is... I don't know... I love the guy!!! Every times he opens his mouth he says something incredibly intelligent, witty and smart! I feel sorry for him because he does look really lonely in that big house (I undestand now why he prefered to live in a hotel room in Boston Legal) and with no friends other than that Elleanor. That last scene of him at the first episode alone by the pool just breaks my heart! He needs a Denny or something!! It's a relief to know that in the futur Denny Crane is going to be there for him! Ummm... It's just weird watching all this just after watching Boston Legal... But whatever! Love you Alan!! ;D I think I'm going to stay overnight till I finish the whole season!

I loved the Alan from the Practice as well. Towards the end of Boston Legal, Alan Shore seemed like a shadow of his former self. Perhaps it was meant to happen as his friendship with Denny became strong and nurturing. Exactly what Alan Shore needed.

I just finished watching The Practice a couple weeks ago after watching Boston Legal all the way through as well. He was certainly extra yummy in that, before he put on the extra weight. I know exactly what you mean about that scene by the pool, too! It was so lonely! I too thought to myself AWWW...he needs his Denny Crane! I agree sixteen that by the end of Boston Legal he seemed like a shadow of his former self. Or rather, just a more matured version.

This is my favorite Alan...the darker more self destructive version; but, there was no way they could have continued that character for the long haul. If they had Alan would have either been disbarred or self destructed. The maturation brought about by his devoted friendship with Denny was exactly where the character needed to go. If you look at HOUSE you see what happens when the character just continues down the dark and destructive path...he becomes totally unsympathetic and uninteresting. By the time LEGAL ended I still loved Alan and would have watched another spin off with this character. As far as House goes I really don't care about him anymore...they ruined the character.

They should make a Boston Legal movie..like how Sex & the City did one. So we could get to see the new life of Alan Shore & Denny Crane as husband and husband. Haha...I'd totally watch it!

I also prefer the Alan of The Practice. He was sexier in looks and in demeanor.

Hmm...while the Alan of The Practice is edgier and slimmer - I myself prefer the Alan of Boston Legal because he's more loveable...which in turn makes him far more sexier. He still keeps his edge but with a very endearing quality.
In fact, coming out of Boston Legal, I found the younger version of James not nearly as sexy as the chubby Alan Shore I knew. That's because for me, there has to be a totally loveable character on the inside for the outside to be looked at as sexy at all. At that time I hadn't actually watched James as a younger man though, or even done much research on him as a person either, so I didn't feel I "knew" him. I only felt I "knew" Alan Shore. Thus my crazy love affair with him. Lol. I'm probably the odd one of the group.

Ultimately though I love both of them and completely adore the actor who brought them to life.

I know that DEK is responsible for writing the slow metamorphosis that we see in Alan's character and I'm certain that it was a collaborative effort between him and James. (Somewhere I remember a conversation between the two about missing the more outrageous behaviors of the younger Alan Shore.) The wonderful part is that James made Alan so totally real that people still talk about Alan as if he really exists. There are so few other characters that survive this way. James' gift for his craft is what blows me away and has kept me coming back for more over the span of years.

So very very true! Alan does take on a life of his own thanks to James. Orchidlover (and anyone else who kas seen him in person) when you saw James in person did you look at him and think, "Alan Shore" or did you look at him and not even picture Alan Shore?

Not once did I think of Alan, nor of any other of the characters that James has brought to life. I was in "right now" with a flesh and blood James Spader and so excited that I couldn't breathe right. And it was freezing cold and windy. He was so kind and patient and accomodating to every request. I get emotional remembering. I have a number of photos of him around my home, some autographed and none of them are of one of his characters. You remember the photo of him at Sardi's? I love that one. It's just him, happy, smiling, enjoying the moment. Maybe it's because he so completely inhabits his characters that I only saw him on the sidewalk. He was not "in character", not even Jack Lawson.

That is exactly how I felt! There was not one of his characters that he reminded me of when I saw him in person...like you said, "not even Jack Lawson." He seemed so much younger than Lawson. His characters really inhabit his body and mind to the point that he changes.

Agree, he just seemed like....James Spader. I think he looked totally different from Jack Lawson.
